Zoomed in on the materials
The main material of this backpack is repurposed vinyl banner material from outdated banners from the University of Antwerp. Although it is not an organic material (it cannot be composted) it is still an eco-friendly material option, be it for the reason that it is material that is saved from going to a landfill.
The material of the outer pockets and the laptop separator are also repurposed materials from the University of Antwerp. But these are not made from old banner material, but from their old flags.
The handle is made from old UAntwerp keycords.
The straps, webbing (with exception of the handle), are made from econlyl regenerated nylon, a type of recycled nylon (from fishing nets, scrap textile, ...) that is just as pure, strong and recyclable as virgin nylon. Read more about this material here. It's Oeko-Tex 100 certified, which means it's clear of any toxic materials and is safe for skin contact. Even though it's recycled, and designed for circular economy, it's still plastic, which we try to use as less as possible. But the strong and durable character of the material is something you don't come across in other (more sustainable, organic) materials.
The quick release buckle is strong and durable, it is made from nylon. We haven't been able to get the exact origin of the production facility from our wholesaler but we are working on it. Nylon isn't the most sustainable plastic but it is quite strong. The combination of strong material and a robust design should guarantee a long lifetime for the product.
The Obvious x UAntwerp brand label is woven with polyester yarn of which 50 procent is recycled. It's Oeko-Tex 100 certified, which means it's clear of any toxic materials and is safe for skin contact.
